I can't even believe the time has come to write this sad blog post. Dixie passed away on Tuesday, May 3, 2016 in the early evening. This last week has been one of the hardest weeks of our lives. All of us have been so sad and our house feels very empty. Every memory I have since Marcus and I have been together has been with Dixie, since he got her in college. It's so hard for me to see Marcus in his daily routine without his little pup by his side. Dixie truly was the best dog ever, and words cannot accurately describe what an amazing impact she had on our life, and the lives of so many others! I've enjoyed hearing stories from others the past few days. So many of you have shared your favorite memories of Dixie and some of them I had even forgotten about! If Dixie would have been able to talk, we can only imagine the crazy stories she could have told about her life in Kentucky, Massachusetts, Indiana and Illinois. Sonoma and Cora loved her dearly and they are still very upset that she's gone. Everything in my house reminds me of Dixie. Every room, every ray of sunlight --she's everywhere. Meal time and the evenings seem to be the hardest. We are hoping the new baby will bring lots of comfort in just a few months.
If you want to see some fantastic pictures of Dixie's first 10 years of life - click the link below. I made a blog tribute to Dixie for her 10th birthday a few years ago and we loved looking back on it the other night:
DIXIE - 10 years
(It's a good thing I made the tribute to Dixie after 10 years, otherwise I would be spending more hours than I already have looking through all of our old pictures! )
And here are some recent pictures from the past few years:
The last two pictures we took with Dixie on Tuesday:
The day after Dixie died, the girls found a surprise gift bag waiting for them at the front door. Dixie sent down a little present from Heaven - 2 Boston Terrier Dixie dogs for the girls to snuggle with.
This was in March when we had to board Dixie. We were very nervous about leaving her and the girls were sad to say bye to her for the weekend.
Dixie got almost as excited as the girls on Christmas mornings.
Dixie kept sneaking into the girls' beanbags a lot lately. One winter morning the girls and Marcus were playing in the snow and Dixie and I laid by the fire together.
Last July we had an episode with Dixie when she got very sick. Luckily she pulled through and had a great 10 more months of life with us.
Most of my pictures I looked back through, I could see Dixie in the back ground somewhere. She was always there.
Best friends.
You couldn't have asked for a more patient loving dog with children and babies than Dixie. The girls were so rough with her when they were younger and she never got cross with them.
Marcus' college roommate's wife sent me this picture of when Dixie was a puppy down in Kentucky
Dixie used to be so playful and active back in the day
This is one of our all time favorite videos of Dixie and Sonoma
Dixie loved:
being around people, especially Marcus, finding sunny spots to lay in, curling up on rugs or in the girls' beanbags, rolling in the grass, licking things, ice cream, picking up scraps of food ( even though she got a sensitive stomach as she grew older and I always had to yell at her about that ), playing fetch for hours on end even in the hot summer heat, chasing the vacuum, laying by the fire, chasing deer, laying by the girls' doors every night when we were putting them to bed, sneaking in the girls' rooms after we put them to bed, eating her food, and loving her family.
I hope the days and nights get easier without little Dixie, but I know that I will never stop loving her or remembering how she loved us.
